Larsen, Morton- Duncan Mills 1916
Larsen, Morten (1858-1930) Woodcarver, painter. Born in Jutland, Denmark on Nov 14, 1858. Larsen studied wood carving and painting in Denmark and trained at an industrial art school there. When he served in the Danish army, he was one of the king's guards. In 1892 he settled in San Francisco. Prior to the disaster of 1906, which destroyed his hand-made tools, he did wood carvings for the Sherman Clay Piano Company to adorn the tops of their pianos and made figurines which he sold. His wood sculpture is reminiscent of European folk art. One of the last of San Francisco's Lamplighters, in his leisure he painted landscapes of Yosemite and the San Francisco Bay Area. Larsen died at his home at 1273 Hampshire St on Aug14, 1930. Exh: Mechanics; First Inst Fair, 1893 (medal). In; Oakland Museum.
