Mersfelder, Jules (1865-1937)Landscape Painter. Born Aug 26 1865 in Stockton, CA. He began drawing at an early age and when he was a teenager he moved to SF where he studied for three yrs at the School of Design under Virgil Williams. He moved to NYC where he exhibited at the first exhibition of the Society of Amerian Artist He won a bronze metal at the Louisiana Purchase Expo in St Louis of 1904 and was awarded the Klio Ass'n Prize at the annual exhibition held at the AIC where 18 of his canvassas were accepted by the jury. He returned to SF in 1891. He lived his final years in Berkeley CA and died Oct 23 1937 Although he made no european trips his works bear evidence of strong influence by the French Barbizons Many of his landscapes of the rugged old oaks of California compare favorably with those painted by William Keith.
