Borglum, Elizabeth Janes -Peasant Girl
Borglum, Elizabeth Janes (1848-1922) Landscape painter. Born in Racine, WI on Dec 21, 1848. Elizabeth Janes studied art and music in Boston, NYC and Paris. Her marriage to JW Putnam, ending in divorce. While in Milwaukee she taught music before moveing to SF in 1881. She continued her art studios there with Wm Keith and at the School of Design under Virgil Williams and LP Latimer. Moving to Los Angeles in 1884, she was a leader in the small art community. In 1889 she married John Gutzon Borglum who was her pupil and 19 yrs younger. The Borglums then spent the next ten years studying and exhibiting in Europe. Due to marital problems, she returned to Southern California in 1902. Settling in Sierra Madre, she painted and taught at her studio "El Rosario" and divorced in 1908. Mrs Borglum was active there until her death in Venice, CA on May 21, 1922. Her work is rooted in the Tonalist-Barbizon esthetic.
