Gamble, john Marshal (1863-1957) Landscape Painter, Born in Morristown, NJ on Nov 25 1863. John Gamble's father worked for the Pacific Mail Steamship Comapny and whenJohn was a teenager he moved with his family to Auckland NZ. At age 20, he sailed to San Francisco and began art training at the School of Design under Virgil Williams and Emil Carlsen. After further traiing in Paris at AcademieJulian under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant, he returned to Sf in 1892 and opened a studio and when most of the city went up in flames in1906 he relocated to Santa Barbara and remained there for the rest of his life. He earned his living throughout his career with the sale of his paintings He suffered a stroke in his studio and died on April 7, 1957. Gamble is nationally know for his landscapes of the California hills.
