Podchernikoff, Alexis Matthew -Desert Landscape
Podchernikoff, Alexis Matthew (1886-1933) Painter. Born in Vladmir, Russia on Feb 26, 1885. Podchernikoff first studied art with is grandfather Dmitri Zolotarieff and later with Ilya Repin and Verestchagin. In Moscow, he was awarded a gold medal and his work "My Belove Russian Wood" was purchased by the Royal Art Commission. After the Russian-Japanese War, he immigrated to the US in 1903 and settled in SF. In 1913 an art dealer from Santa Barbara convinced him to move there. A painting of his Santa Barbara studio appeared on the front cover of Literary Digest, March 10, 1928. Although he spent the last 20 yrs of his life in southern California, he returned often to SF to paint scenes of Marin and the northern coast. His style and palette are often compared to those by Corot. His last years were spent in Pasadent where he died of tuberculosis on Oct 31, 1933. Exh: Calif Artis, Golden Gate Park Museum 1915.
